Slip Resistance Testing

Every step matters.

A comprehensive assessment of a surface’s frictional performance can combine slip resistance measurements from DCOF, ramp, and pendulum testing methods.

Let’s discuss which methodologies would work best for your specific product and testing needs.

Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) Testing

The most commonly-used standard for measuring DCOF in the U.S.

  • Specified in tile industry standards ANSI A137.1, A137.2, and A137.3

  • Codified in ICC’s International Swimming Pool & Spa Code and IAPMO’s Uniform Swimming Pool Spa & Hot Tube Code

  • Tested per ANSI A326.3 using a BOT 3000E device

Ramp Testing

Well-suited for surfaces with raised or profiled finishes.

  • Testing based on human ambulation under standardized conditions

  • Commonly used internationally, sometimes called the German Ramp test.

Pendulum Testing

Commonly used internationally, in countries such as the U.S., the UK, Australia, and throughout Europe.

  • IPAL offers two different test foot options— walking in footwear and walking barefoot.

  • Codified in ICC’s International Swimming Pool & Spa Code and IAPMO’s Uniform Swimming Pool Spa & Hot Tube Code
